Lupus self-management app

Project Description

LOOP was a concept designed for the AppsForHealth competition in 2012 in two days with my colleague, Shivani Goyal. We developed a mobile health app solution for the SickKids sponsored challenge to help youth with lupus. This concept placed 1st at the AppsForHealth competition and won $3000.

Problem Space

Systemic Lupus Erythematosis is an uncommon disease in the adolescent age range that can affect any part of the body. Young people with lupus struggle with taking their medications; feeling isolated; lack up-to-date knowledge; and want to communicate with their health care providers in a way that is comfortable for them.

Solution & Concept

Through an interview with a patient with lupus and through some quick literature review, my colleague and I came up several ideations for a mHealth app aimed at adolescents.

We determined several sections of the app, including:

  • a health journal for the patient to track their symptoms and medications;
  • personal health trends;
  • My Loop (includes MyHealth Passport, appointments, contacts, badges/challenges); and
  • LoopIn (the social aspect of the app).

Mocks were created using using Adobe Photoshop.

The app was presented to a panel of judges at the first annual AppsForHealth competition and placed first. The concept was then presented to the Lupus Consensus Meeting in December 2012, held by Dr. Miriam Kaufman.
