Junos Space Platform

Company Overview

Juniper Networks builds networks that run the world’s top 100 service providers, and 99 of the Fortune Global 100. The company design and sells high-performance Internet Protocol networks products and services.

One of their biggest products is called the Junos Space Platform – a comprehensive network management solution that manages Juniper’s switching, routing, and security devices. It is comprised of a product suite ranging from virtual director, security director (a centralized management tool for security policy administrators), to J-Web (the on-box solution).

Challenges & Approach

The Junos Space platform had many disparate applications lacking a common look and feel. Furthermore, the Juniper team also sought out help to improve on their existing products. Our team applied a broad range of design and research methods towards improving Juniper’s current and future product suite.

Pattern Design

We collaborated with Juniper’s internal UX team to develop a UI pattern and component library for their next generation product suite using Patternry. The library provided detailed guidelines and specifications for how 34 key UI elements should look and behave (including items such as alerts & notifications, date & time range selector, etc.).

From Jul. – Aug. 2015, the pattern library project continued. I led this effort with support from two staff designers. We focused mainly on the grid system. Juniper’s grid system is utilized by many products, therefore, we needed to be able to accommodate the suite of products by keeping in mind each product’s features and unique asks.

Heuristic Analysis and Solutions

One of my colleagues from EchoUser had conducted a heuristic evaluation of two of Juniper’s products to assess how they could be improved through small and large scale redesigns. Altogether, EchoUser identified over 250 issues and corresponding solutions across both products.

Based on the heuristic evaluation that was conducted, I provided solutions on how to improve the product. Deliverables included wireframes and detailed mock-ups with annotations. My main focus was to help redesign the firewall policy editor.
